A day in the life
Team Leader in the Fund Accounting department
Describe your typical working day?
My day involves a mix of reviewing tasks completed by the team, from quality checking documentation, to managing the team’s workload. I also provide one on one coaching and mentoring while also fulfilling an escalation function should any issues arise. I also work closely with my manager on process improvements and a wide variety of projects, all in all making sure we provide a quality service and meet client’s expectations.
What qualifications do you have/what is your previous work experience?
I graduated from the University of Limerick in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology. In 2014, I became a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Prior to starting in Northern Trust I worked in an end to end funds operation in Dublin for almost 5 years.
What is the best thing about your job?
Northern Trust offers fantastic training. There are always courses available on a variety of topics / systems and we are actively encouraged to participate in these.
And the biggest challenge?
My previous role was with a much smaller operation than Northern Trust where we didn’t have the same level of interaction with different departments across the business as we do here. So it’s definitely an adjustment for me but it gives me great exposure to the rest of the organisation and a better understanding of the business as a whole.
What advice would you give someone considering applying for a job with Northern Trust?
If you are looking for a challenging role and exposure to a large range of diverse funds then I would recommend Northern Trust. There is plenty of opportunity within Northern Trust to get involved with other areas of the business and work on projects etc. It gives people the chance to grow their knowledge of the business as a whole. Northern Trust is rapidly expanding and it’s great to be a part of a company that can offer further opportunities in the future.
